Anti-Social

Estimated Reading Time: 7 mins
1. Self-Control – Block out distracting websites for a set amount of time. If you find yourself slipping into a Twitter sinkhole when you should be updating your business plan, Self-Control may be the app you need.
2. TrackTime – Audit how you’re spending your time on your computer. This good-looking app tracks everything you do on your computer, spitting back out a sort of “attention audit.”
3. Concentrate – Maximize focus while shifting between different tasks. Concentrate is great for shifting between tasks that require different mindsets.
4. Notational Velocity – Centralize and sync all of your scattered notes. If you’re anything like me, one primarily challenge for focusing is getting all your notes in one place.
5. FocusBooster – Focus on single tasks for 25 minutes apiece. This app is based on the principles of the Pomodoro Technique, a time management system that challenges you to focus on a single task for 25 minutes and then give yourself a 5-minute break.
6. Think – Limit your attention to a single application at a time. This is an extremely simple app that’s akin to “Spaces” on a Mac. When activated, Think allows you to bring just one application into the foreground on your computer, while everything else is hidden underneath a nearly opaque backdrop.
7. FocusWriter – Create a distraction-free environment for writing. If writing is something that you do on a regular basis, it’s incredibly useful to have an easy way to create a distraction-free setting.
8. Anti-Social – Block the social websites that are killing your focus. Anti-Social is like a light version of full-scale Internet-blocker Freedom. Rather than blocking the Internet in its entirety, Anti-Social automatically blocks all of the known timesinks for a set period of time.
9. StayFocusd – Curb the time you spend browsing time-wasting sites. This extension, for users of Google’s Chrome browser, works in the reverse manner to Anti-Social or Self-Control.
10. Time Out – Take regular breaks to keep your focus sharp. For optimal focus, we need to take regular time-outs to relax and rebuild our energy. Time Out is a super-simple application that runs in the background while you work.

Practice
1. Improve your English skills online for free. IELTS is an English test, so obviously the most important first steps in preparing for the IELTS exam is to improve your general English ability in all the four skills of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
2. My advice for studying. I recommend your English studies be about 40% IELTS practice tests and 60% real-world English from the media, books (read a lot), news websites, TV, conversation practice, vocabulary building exercises and so on.
3. I haven’t got a teacher to practice speaking with. No problem, one useful method to practice and self correct your speaking is to get your smartphone and record yourself doing the speaking test, then playback the recording, next listen for fluency issues such as hesitation, pronunciation, vocabulary mistakes and grammar errors.
4. Make a study plan. If you really want to hit Band 7+ you need to get organised and focused. Set up your own study schedule or study plan, but first, find your weaknesses and get to work on them every day..
5. Listening. I recommend listening to TED Talks, News topics, Podcasts or Online English lessons. Here are some very useful websites. Very good lesson here on how to understand native speakers..
6. Reading. Reading is the best way to learn new vocabulary such as phrasal verbs, collocations, idioms and fixed expressions. Here are some online resources for reading.
7. Grammar and Vocabulary. Grammar is a big problem for most people taking IELTS, especially when writing essays. The most common mistakes I see are Articles (the, a, an, zero article) plurals, countable uncountable nouns and correct use of collocations.
8. Study Tips. When you find a new word or phrase, underline it, make a note of it but most importantly Practice it ! … Just making a list of new words is not effective.
9. IELTS practice tests 1. British Council Free Practice Tests: Free practice tests for reading, listening, writing and speaking 2. IELTS.org : More free practice tests and good information about IELTS here.

Plant
1. The premise is simple – every time you begin to focus, you plant a seed. This seed will grow into a tree for as long as you stay on the app and resist the temptation to use your phone. If you keep that focus up, you’ll eventually have your very own virtual forest. What’s better is that this reward-based model translates to actual change. You can earn virtual coins for focusing, then use them to plant trees through “Trees for the Future,” Forest’s not-for-profit partner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is focusfocus to do??

Focus To-Do allows you to create lists for different areas of your life, which can be synced across all your devices – even Apple Watch! In this way, the app helps you plan your day and improve time management to clear that list. On top of that, there’s a built-in Pomodoro timer to help you focus in short windows.

How much do focus group studies pay??

Focus group studies pay respondents anywhere from $20 to $200 per session, sometimes even more. Every focus group you join will have a different level of compensation.

What are online focus groups and how do they work??

As the name implies, online focus groups are pretty much the same thing as in-person focus groups, besides the fact that you’ll participate in an online forum rather than go to an in-person location. Instead of driving to an office building in your area, you can log onto an online focus group platform on your desktop, tablet, or mobile phone.

What are the best free resources for studying??

Another incredible free resource, My Study Life is a planner to help you organise your tasks, assessment due dates and exams. Available online and as downloadable app, you can schedule tasks so you can keep track of your progress, as well as get notifications of the tasks you might have missed (or snoozed).
