Adults 1. Adults have a higher sense of self-direction and motivation. Adult learners are much more self-directed and motivated than young learners. Adults tend to learn because they want to or they see the direct benefit of learning, rather than because they are told to or are expected to.
2. Adults use their life experience to facilitate learning. Adults, of course, have more experience than children. Adult learners rely heavily on their experiences when they engage in learning, and they benefit from training programs that understand this.
3. Adults are focused on achieving goals. Adults enter the learning process focused on results. They need to know how the information will help them achieve their goals, whether personal or professional.
4. Adults need to know how the information is relevant. To properly engage a learner, the relevancy of the information within the training program must be highlighted.
5. Adults are practical. When developing a training program, keep in mind that the knowledge gained should be applied immediately. Adults learn quickly and remember what they learn when they can turn around and apply that knowledge in their role.
6. Adults are looking for help and mentorship. Adult learners understand that looking to an experienced role model will help them in their learning journey.
7. Adults are open for modern ways of learning. Adults are flexible when it comes to how they engage with knowledge. They understand that it can be gained in a variety of different ways, and are willing to try new formats.
8. Adults want to choose how they learn. Adult learners respond positively to self-directed learning. Being able to control how and when they learn means that they are more likely to be fully engaged with the content, rather than simply going through the motions of learning.
Learning FKA has identified ten adult learning principles specific to instructors/facilitators that ensure learning happens. 1. Adults must have a reason to learn. It is much easier for e-learners to tune out, so establishing learner motivation is even more important in the virtual classroom. You must work hard to maintain motivation throughout the session.
Principle 1. Multimedia Principle. For learning, using a combination of media types is more effective than using text alone. But beware, research shows that using irrelevant graphics can actually impair learning.A combination of relevant visual, audio and textual content works well; however, the most effective pairing is visual and audio together.
2. Contiguity Principle. Because eLearning often takes place within a scrollable interface, the tighter the text-graphic alignment, the easier it is for users to understand the relationship between each element.
3. Modality Principle. The way you present information should be dependant on how complex the information is. For example, if you’re trying to explain a complicated process, it may be more effectively conveyed in a visual format so you can avoid potential ‘information overload’.
4. Redundancy Principle. As with the Modality Principle, the way you present information also directly impacts learning. The elements you don’t include are just as important as the ones you do include.
5. Coherence Principle. As a designer, you should use the same formatting throughout your interface and bear in mind that when learning is the objective, ‘less is more.’
6. Personalization Principle. People generally absorb information more effectively when they feel like there’s a ‘human’ element included and when content is personalized, conversational and informal.
