1. Safety. Before students can succeed academically, they must feel safe, both physically and mentally. Although schools use a variety of measures to ensure students’ physical safety, certain efforts sometimes have negative effects on students, particularly those who are traditionally underserved.
2. Engagement. Recent Gallup data shows a troubling trend—as students move through the K–12 education system, they become increasingly less engaged. By the time students reach eleventh and twelfth grades, only one-third of students report feeling engaged.
3. Connectedness. Students must feel connected to teachers, staff, and other students. Schools can nurture these connections by focusing on students’ social and emotional learning (SEL).
4. Support. Students must feel supported by all those connected to their learning experience. This includes teachers, classmates, administrators, family, and community members.

Whether you were hurled into elearning through unforeseen circumstances or you are amongst the many teachers who have chosen to educate our youth online, these are some strategies that can help you maintain a well-managed online classroom environment.
2. Build an Engaging Experience. I will reiterate the point that low learning engagement is the gateway to many issues in online learning. It is important to build a learning experience that will be engaging for your students.
3. Cultivate Community Amongst Students. Building a positive relationship between teachers and students is only part of the battle of cultivating a productive learning environment.
4. Establish and Reiterate Routines. Routines are important in any learning environment, especially when you can’t be present with your students daily. Simplifying routines is wise.
5. Educate Students about Plagiarism. Online learning lends itself to increased plagiarism. Students are working on technological devices with access to endless resources, and the temptation to copy information can feel insurmountable for students.
6. Establish Communication Norms. Communication in an online environment is a unique skill that our students will indubitably use in the future. Setting norms for communication with teachers and between students will be crucial to classroom management online.
7. Set Expectations and Be Consistent. When you establish norms and routines, it is important to expect that students follow them and be consistent in your response when they don’t.
8. Acknowledge Student Accomplishments. When students are productive, engaged, and learning online, it is important to acknowledge them. This is, of course, important in every classroom.

1. Establish a supportive learning culture. Each member of the learning community should have the feeling of connectedness. They must feel that they are contributing to the overall environment while being a bigger and important part of a supportive learning culture.
2. Address Learners’ Needs. Just like adults, learners also have some psychological needs for order and security, love and belonging, competence and personal power, novelty and freedom and even fun.
3. Keep it Positive. Learners respond far better to praise than punitive measures. Appreciation is the key to motivation, unlike humiliation, which is highly discouraging.
4. Provide Feedback. Feedback is the great way to connect with learners, facilitate online training and to set learning efforts in the right direction. Feedback is vital for learners as it helps them in tracking their progress and in changing their learning strategy accordingly.
5. Celebrate Success. In addition to feedback and appreciation, another way to establish a positive and effective learning environment is to celebrate the learners’ success.
6. Safety. A good learning environment offers a safe platform for learners. Before you can expect learners to succeed academically, they should also feel safe both mentally and physically.
7. Employ Interactive Games and Activities. An effective online learning platform is the one that establishes strong interactions and promotes collaborative learning culture.

7 Tips To Create The Perfect Study Environment For You

Tips Rasmussen.edu Show details

1. Diminish the distractions. Any environment, even a library, can cause you to lose focus. It all depends on your personal study preferences. Some students find their living spaces too distracting because of chores and other people in the household.
2. Develop a study routine. You can’t always control where you study, but you can develop a routine that tells your brain it’s time to get to work no matter what environment you find yourself in.
3. Don’t go it alone. Sometimes the right environment is more about the people you’re with than where you’re studying. Enlisting help from others can be just the thing that gets more extroverted students in the studying mindset.
4. Try a change of scenery. It might be convenient to study at home, but spouses, kids and a pile of dirty laundry can all become distractions that derail your focused study time.
5. Make your studies portable. Students who get creative with taking their studies on the go can find a great study environment in some unlikely places. Read a chapter or watch a lecture during your lunch break at work.
6. Get a little help from your friends (and family) “Don’t be afraid to ask friends or family for some of their time to help with your test prep,” Blake says.
7. Use technology to your advantage. There’s no denying that technology can be a huge help in completing your coursework. Malson points out that nearly any environment can become a makeshift study room when you have free Wi-Fi hotspots, tablets and smartwatches at hand.

10 Ways Teachers Can Create A Positive Learning Environment

Ways Freespiritpublishingblog.com Show details

1. Address Student Needs. Remember that students, like adults, have not only physical needs but also important psychological needs for security and order, love and belonging, personal power and competence, freedom and novelty, and fun.
2. Create a Sense of Order. All students need structure and want to know that their teacher not only knows his content area, but also knows how to manage his classroom.
3. Greet Students at the Door Every Day. As students enter your classroom, greet each one at the door. Explain that you want students to make eye contact with you, give you a verbal greeting, and—depending on the age of the students—a high five, fist bump, or handshake.
4. Let Students Get to Know You. Students come in to the classroom with preconceived perceptions of teachers. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it can be an obstacle.
5. Get to Know Your Students. The more you know about your students’ cultures, interests, extracurricular activities, personalities, learning styles, goals, and mindsets, the better you can reach them and teach them.
6. Avoid Rewarding to Control. Over 50 years of research has shown that incentives, gold stars, stickers, monetary rewards, A’s, and other bribes only serve to undermine students’ intrinsic motivation, create relationship problems, and lead to students doing nothing without a promised reward.
7. Avoid Judging. When students feel like they are being judged, pigeonholed, and/or labeled, they distrust the person judging them. It’s hard not to judge a student who just sits there doing no schoolwork after you’ve done everything you can to motivate her.
8. Employ Class-Building Games and Activities. It’s important to develop positive relationships withyour students; it’s equally important to develop positive relationships amongthem.
9. Be Vulnerable. Being vulnerable develops trust faster than any other approach. Admitting your mistakes shows that you are human and makes you more approachable.
10. Celebrate Success. At first this may seem to contradict strategy six about avoiding rewards. It doesn’t. A celebration is a spontaneous event meant to recognize an achievement.

22 Remote Learning Tips For Parents Helping At Home

Remote Teachthought.com Show details

1. Set (and keep) a schedule. The closer this is to a ‘school schedule,’ the easier it will likely be on everyone. You obviously can (and probably should) revise whatever you come up with at first to fit your circumstance at home (your work schedule, sleeping schedules, etc.).
2. Make sure they have any materials necessary to complete all assignments. Whether its pencil and paper, a stable WiFi connection, log-in information for all accounts, a PDF reader, or note-taking apps or reading strategies–whatever they need to get the work done.
3. Provide an environment conducive to learning. This isn’t always easy. If they’re too isolated, it’s difficult to check in with them. If they’re at the kitchen table, depending on the child or their environment, they may be too distracted.
4. Create a daily plan. Creating a daily plan isn’t just a matter of scheduling. A daily plan looks at the schedule and then identifies to-do items for that day and combines the two for a specific plan for that specific day.
5. Don’t teach–help them understand. Helping students understand is one of the more obvious remote learning tips for parents. This could be the topic for an entire book because how this happens is complicated and varies greatly from student to student and grade level to grade level and content area to content area.
6. Make sure all work is completed. And any work that remains incomplete is incomplete for a good reason and has a time-bound, actionable next-step (e.g., email the teacher asking for clarification on step 3 of the activity so that you can turn it in tomorrow by noon).
7. Help them check messages and communicate with school. Check for messages daily from teachers and other students and make sure to reply to any messages that require one.
8. Keep in mind that it’s about the child, not the work. This can be difficult for some parents to keep in mind when there is so much pressure (on everyone) to complete the work.
9. Learn to identify the barriers. This is something teachers have to learn early on in their careers–how to pinpoint exactly what’s happening or going wrong (not unlike an automotive mechanic or NASA engineers or computer coder.
10. Use school resources. Contact your child’s school, as well as the local school district and state education resources for support. This is especially critical if your child has an IEP or 504 plan and requires additional support and services at school.
